do you only work with women of color?
at root + restore, the mental health and well-being of women of color is a central priority, and my clinical expertise does extend to supporting men of color as well. the approach at root + restore recognizes the interconnectedness of individual and collective well-being. root + restore is conscious to the broader healing and support of our communities, reflecting our belief in mutual care, empowerment, and social responsibility.
what is therapy like?
therapy is a highly individualized process, shaped by each client’s specific concerns, goals, and circumstances. as such, the structure and focus of therapy will vary from person to person. sessions often involve discussion of current life events, exploration of relevant personal history, and review of progress or insights gained since the previous meeting. the duration of therapy may be brief and solution-focused, targeting a specific issue, or more long-term to address persistent patterns, complex concerns, or broader goals for personal development. regularly scheduled sessions—most commonly on a weekly basis—are typical in order to maintain continuity and therapeutic momentum.
client engagement is a critical factor in the effectiveness of therapy. therapeutic progress is most likely when clients are actively involved in the process and committed to applying insights and strategies outside of sessions. to support this, therapists may recommend supplementary activities such as reading relevant literature, journaling, self-monitoring specific behaviors, or taking concrete steps aligned with therapeutic goals. individuals who seek psychotherapy are generally prepared to initiate meaningful change, consider alternative perspectives, and assume responsibility for their personal growth and psychological well-being.
what are the steps to begin working with root + restore?
step one: you are invited to begin with a free consultation, which provides the opportunity for you to connect with root + restore. you are welcomed to ask questions and share details about what you want to achieve in seeking therapy. a consultation can offer the space for you to check in with your intuition and see if there's alignment.
step two: if you decide to move forward, you’ll schedule your first session, often referred to as an intake session. you will receive next steps for Simple Practice, the secure electronic health record and monitoring system, where you can access important documents including billing information and more.
step three: one week prior to your initial session, you will be provided all necessary documentation via e-mail through Simple Practice. the documents include an intake questionnaire, policies, confidentiality, HIPPA, and more. you are invited to prioritize the completion of these documents before the intake session. if the forms are not completed in time for your scheduled session, you will be invited to reschedule the intake session.
step four: the first session will be about ninety minutes. this is a time dedicated to the sharing and learning about your experiences, what led you into the therapy space, your hopes, and anything else you feel ready to share. you are invited to go at your own pace.
step five: following the intake session, goals and ongoing support will be discussed. there is no one-size-fits-all — we’ll figure it out together in a way that works for you.
